Before this year I would have never posted an unedited no makeup photo of myself. I have struggled with acne since I was *9*!!! Swipe to see a pic of that too (my mom literally had a photo of it still saved 🤨). As @rebeccataylorhair has been updating social media on her weight loss journey, she has instilled in me the bravery to share my semi embarrassing old photos. I figure as a beauty professional, it’s my obligation to share my experiences, opinion, and education on not just hair, but any aspect of “beauty” where I can help someone feel more comfortable in their skin. After all the harsh face washes, chemical peels, acne lasers, every ointment under the sun, rounds of antibiotics, years of unnecessary birth control to control my hormone induced acne, picking, not picking, a steamer, praying to the acne gods, and probably tons of stuff I’ve long forgotten, I decided to try Accutane. I had talked to my doctor about the risks for years but always decided it was silly to get on a potentially dangerous drug for cosmetic purposes. After all, sometimes- after my period week acne had healed, as long as I didn’t eat too much sugar, washed my pillowcases every 3 days, never fell asleep with makeup on, washed my face twice a day with my harsh face wash and remembered my benzoyl peroxide ointment- I would only have ~a few~ pimples, which I could cover with makeup.
After doing a round of Accutane, my face is the clearest it’s been since my mom paid to have my face laser treated before prom (which hurt so bad I cried the entire time and my skin was only clear for 3 weeks). I can wake up in the morning and not have to avoid eye contact with the mirror. I don’t feel like a disgusting blob if I leave the house without makeup anymore. After I finish my makeup, I don’t have to look at myself and think, “wow! I look cute... except for these pimples that even makeup can’t fix. Everyone told me that I would grow out of my acne, but that before picture was taken in January. I’m 25.
If you’ve struggled with acne, talk to your doctor or dermatologist about Accutane. I suggest doing a ton of research first, because there are a lot of nasty side effects. But it was worth it to me
